Ιnternational training course “Training in Microalgae-Related Industrial Processes”, University of Almería (Spain) 6-17/07/2026

Dear colleagues,

I would like to invite you and your students to participate in the international training course “Training in Microalgae-Related Industrial Processes”, which will take place at the University of Almería (Spain) from July 6th to July 17th, 2026. The course includes 50 hours of teaching activities within the Study Abroad programme of the University of Almería and is coordinated by Prof. Francisco Gabriel Acién Fernández.

The programme provides an integrated perspective of microalgae biotechnology from laboratory to industrial scale, combining:

• Lectures on the biological and engineering fundamentals of microalgae cultivation
• Practical training sessions in laboratories and pilot facilities
• Modelling, control, and simulation of microalgae processes
• Technical visits to research infrastructures and industrial companies working with microalgae technologies

The course covers key topics including:

• Microalgae biology and growth fundamentals
• Photobioreactor design and operation
• Monitoring, modelling, and process control of microalgae systems
• Harvesting and downstream processing of microalgae biomass
• Biorefinery concepts and high-value products
• Techno-economic and sustainability assessment
• Industrial applications including wastewater treatment, biostimulants, CO₂ capture, and bio-based products

Participants will have the opportunity to interact directly with researchers, engineers, and industry professionals, and to visit pilot and industrial facilities involved in the development of microalgae technologies. The course is developed with the collaboration of industrial partners and several ongoing European research and innovation projects, providing participants with direct exposure to real industrial case studies and current developments in the European algae bioeconomy.

Registration is now open through the Study Abroad programme of the University of Almería.

Course information and registration:

Participants may choose whether to include accommodation in the registration package or only the course registration. Those who do not require accommodation can indicate this preference during registration or contact the Study Abroad office directly at sabroad@ual.es for further instructions.

The registration deadline is May 25th, 2026, or earlier if the course reaches full capacity.
